Pembroke at the Ashmolean

jcrartfund

The biggest event of our Arts Week so far has been our trip to the Ashmolean. Students, fellows, and former masters alike enjoyed an exclusive evening filled with art, live music, and fascinating talks thanks to a collaboration with the University Engagement Programme. Over one hundred Pembrokians flooded the historic halls of the museum to hear a range of speakers from DPhil students, to the artist in residence in Oxford University, and even our very own curator Sarah Hegenbart.

Special thanks go to the University Engagement Programme (you can find out more about it below), Dr Mallica Kumbera Landrus, and Art Fund Chair Claudia Zwar for making the evening possible, and Pembroke's Annual Fund for subsidising nearly half of the event for students.

The University Engagement Programme (UEP) was established with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to further the partnership between the Ashmolean Museum and the University’s faculties, and to enhance the impact of cross-disciplinary teaching and learning at the University of Oxford. Building on the rich tradition of object teaching at Oxford in traditional subjects such as Archaeology and History of Art, the programme’s teaching curators foster innovative collaborations across a wide range of departments and colleges, teaching with objects from the Museum’s collections and offering valuable additional perspectives to both students and faculty on topics as diverse as Geography, Medicine, Oriental Studies, Medieval and Modern Languages, International Development, History etc. This especially achieves the main mission of the UEP i.e. to promote object-based learning, as an enhancement of the teaching/learning environment at Oxford, and to work towards the integration of the Ashmolean’s extensive collections in the pedagogical life of the university.
